The man whose car collided with Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Shahbaz Gill’s vehicle on the highway has been arrested.

The car had been rented out by the owner, Tahir Nazeer, to Wajahat Ali, who was driving it at the time of the accident. The driver admitted to stopping first but fleeing fearing retaliation after seeing Gill exit the vehicle.

According to police, the incident occurred due to Wajahat’s negligence, and there was no deliberate attempt to harm Shahbaz Gill.

“I accidentally collided with Gill’s car on the highway,” the driver told police. He was disappointed that the incident had been politicised.

“Gill attempted to portray the incident as a murder plot. “It can be concluded that it was an accident after questioning the driver and investigating the crash site,” police said.

While travelling from Lahore to Islamabad, Shahbaz Gill’s car overturned near the Khanqah Dogran Interchange in Sheikhupura, causing minor injuries. The PTI leader claimed that he was targeted for assassination and that a vehicle chased him down and deliberately hit his car.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an investigation into the accident in which the PTI leader was injured after his vehicle was allegedly hit by another vehicle.

According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office, all legal requirements should be met during the investigation.
